BOSTON - Michael Pineda tries to continue his terrific start to the season on Wednesday when the New York Yankees play the middle test of a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Pineda won his second straight start last Wednesday against Chicago, as he held the Cubs to just four hits over six scoreless innings to run his record to 2-0, while lowering his ERA to 1.00. He is the first Yankee since Kevin Brown in 2004 to throw at least six innings and allow one run or less in each of his first three starts for the club. "Again, really, really good," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Command of his pitches, command of his changeup, his slider tonight. It wasnt the best conditions to pitch in, but I thought he did a really good job." Pineda beat the Red Sox two starts ago, yielding a run in six innings. Of course, television cameras showed what appeared to be pine tar on his right palm of that one. However, it was never brought to anyones attention and seemed to be cleaned off a few innings later. Boston, meanwhile, will counter with righty John Lackey, who has lost his last two starts and is 2-2 with a 5.25 ERA. After getting hit hard by the Yankees two starts ago, Lackey again struggled on Friday against Baltimore, as he was tagged for six runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. He also walked four batters, more than he had allowed in his three previous outings, when he gave up three over 18 2/3 innings. "Honestly, they had a couple walks, but they were in spots that wasnt that big a deal, against guys I didnt really want to give in to," Lackey said. "I felt OK with it." Lackey surrendered six runs in 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Yanks on April 12 and is 10-11 lifetime against them with a 4.99 ERA in 28 starts. New York got the best of its rivals in Tuesdays opener, as Jacoby Ellsbury gave the Red Sox fans an unwanted welcome back in his return to Fenway Park, going 2-for-5 with two RBI to help the Yankees to a 9-3 rout. Ellsbury, part of two World Series titles during a successful seven-year tenure with the Red Sox, tripled in his first at-bat as a Fenway visitor and later drove in two with a double that highlighted a four-run fifth inning. The star outfielder bolted Boston for a seven-year, $153 million contract with New York during the offseason. Three other Yankee newcomers made big contributions as well, as Masahiro Tanaka yielded just two runs and fanned seven over 7 1/3 innings in another strong start, while Brian McCann went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and Carlos Beltran finished 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI. New York has now won six of its last nine games. Tanaka (3-0) allowed back-to-back homers to David Ortiz and Mike Napoli in the fourth, but just five other hits in his first-ever encounter with the Red Sox. On the other hand, the Yankees battered Boston ace Jon Lester (2-3) for 11 hits and eight runs -- though just three were earned due to a pair of Red Sox errors -- in 4 2/3 innings of work. Napoli ended 2-for-4 and Xander Bogaerts had an RBI double in the loss. "(New York) put some good swings on him," Red Sox manager John Farrell said of Lesters performance. "They mishit some balls, they found some holes. We didnt help out defensively and once again were digging ourself a hole to play catch-up." New York took three of four from the Red Sox earlier this season. After watching Miami put up three runs in the fifth inning Tuesday night against the Chicago Cubs, Redmond was concerned when Koehler gave up a leadoff homer and then loaded the bases. Redmond didnt want to watch a repeat performance of what happened against the Nationals on Aug. 29. "I know in Washington he had that really bad inning the second time through the order," Redmond said. "After we scored he gave up that home run and then he got a little dicey in the strike zone. I just felt like that was the time to get him out of there. Hopefully try to save the game." It worked as the Marlins bullpen combined for 4 2-3 hitless innings in a 6-2 win over the Cubs. Koehler was tagged for six runs in five innings against the Nationals on Aug. 29. "Its disappointing when your team puts up three runs like that. You want to get them back in the dugout as soon as possible. You give up the leadoff home run, things like that are going to happen, but I got to be able to shut them down," Koehler said. "I dont know if it was a combination of trying to do a little too much or with them being a little more patient. It is one of those innings that cant happen. I just got to learn from it." Donovan Solano had three hits, including a two-run double, and Christian Yelich drove in three runs with a double and single for the Marlins, who have won three straight after losing six in a row. Brian Bogusevic hit a solo homer for the Cubs who dropped to 27-44 at the so-called Friendly Confines of Wrigley Field. Koehler pitched 4 1-3 innings, allowing two runs and four hits. The Miami bullpen retired the next 11 batters after he left with the bases loaded. Ryan Webb (2-5) pitched two perfect innings for the win. Edwin Jackson (7-15) only made it through five innings for Chicago, allowing three runs and seven hits. Since pitching a season-high eight innings while beating Milwaukee 6-1 on July 31, Jackson is 0-4, allowing 22 runs over 33 2-3 innings in six starts. The right-hander matched his career-high in losses for a season. He was 5-15 for the Rays in 2007. He is 1-7 lifetime against the Marlins. "Its definitely been a disappointing season. But every lesson is a lesson learned. Koehler loaded the bases with one out and was pulled for Dan Jennings, who allowed a sacrifice fly to Anthony Rizzo. Miami broke it open with a three-run eighth. Solano hit a two-run double off reliever Blaker Parker and Yelich followed with an RBI single. "Hes done a nice job and he just continues to get more and more confident day in and day out," Redmond said of Yelich. "Theyre bringing in a lot of lefties against him but hes been having good at-bats. I think youre starting to see the results of him facing those lefties. Hes starting to get some hits now, but he gives us a great at-bat every time. Hes a great young player and he is going to be a great player in the big leagues for a long time." In the third inning, Koehler took a liner by Castro off his right shin knocking him to the ground. The ball ricocheted to third baseman Chris Coghlan, who was able to throw out Castro at first. After a few warm-up tosses, Koehler stayed in the game. With runners on first and third and two outs, Coghlan made a diving stop on Rizzos ball and threw to second for the force.
